Great interview by Coach Tara, Nneka, Jeannete and Kayla.
Stanford had dropped to number nine in the nation after consecutive losses, DePaul and an overtime l
oss to Tennessee. We were ready to show the nation that Stanford was still to be Feared, and not be messed with --What an amazing week of basketball in Palo Alto. Stanford walked all over Xavier on Tuesday, 89-52. They never had a chance. We beat Xavier by 2 points last March (at Sacramento's Arco Arena) to get to the Final Four. This game was no contest.
Last nights game has been sold out for weeks .... The excitement has been building since Stanford lost to UConn for NCAA Championship last April. We bought our tickets two m
onths ago ... Loran, Kim, Paul, Claire and I have been ready for this game for quite some time. UConn broke the 88-game record winning streak last week set by John Wooden's UCLA men's team , and were at 90 wins before the game last night. UConn hadn't been to Maples Pavilion since 1993. And the last lost UConn had was to Stanford in the Final Four, 2008. Although the news, media, talk around town - was about All American Maya Moore and the UConn Huskies winning streak ... we knew better! UConn was coming to Cardinal land, and we wanted this game.Maples Pavilion was shaking last night, sold out - 7,400 Stanford fans! Nationally televised game ... my mom, dad, brother, sister, nephew ... friends across the nation, my uncle ... were all glued to the television. We were at the game! Witnessing herstory!
... Fans on their feet for most of game ... the roar was non stop. UConn was never in the game, but kept the score close. Maya left her skill outside the Pavilion. And Pohlen came to play with 31 points. It was basketball at its best. We sent a clear message to the Nation - that St
anford is here, and ready for the Pac 10 season to begin. We also said "Geno, go home and don't let the locker room door hit you on the way out!!" And of course, Kim, Loran and I went back home and watched the game again (DVRd it), and it was just as sweet!
Fun times.
Living, loving, laughin!
Peace, Love and Basketball.
